Beets!?

I guess it’s officially day 3...and there has been some progress made.  Can’t say the weight is flying off or I’m popping out of bed earlier but I do have a whole year to improve.

Today I tried a new restaurant and a new food.  It seems silly to many but I am a very picky eater (or particular as I like to say) and I have a pretty bland palate.  I don’t like fruit cooked or squished, condiments at all and I find mozzarella to be a strong cheese.  So, while it’s not skydiving level of scary, ordering beers on my salad today was a minor adventure.  The verdict...not bad.  Tasted very earthy.  I’d survive if they reappeared in my life - unlike cilantro, I wouldn’t survive that!

Day 1

It's officially my birthday and I felt my age this morning...that childhood feeling of invincible long gone as I slather menthol cream onto my aching back and slip my arm into a tendinitis sleeve.  Despite my denial of my advancing age, I do love my birthday!  I love the messages from Facebook friends whom I hear from exactly once a year.  I love using the excuse of "it's my birthday" as a reason to do very little.  Oh, and I love cake.  Delicious, delicious cake.

But today is also day 1!  I did some rough calculations...and while my list isn't done and some of the items aren't single actions...I still have roughly 1600 things to do in a year!!  That works out to that between 4 - 5 tasks a day!  Suddenly I'm having that...can I actually do this panicky feeling.

This is what I typically do - quit before I have started.  Optimistically I say..."not this time!"  Well, I'm off for now...cake for breakfast time.

My mission...

Two times a year I have an existential "what am I doing with my life" breakdown; January 1 and August 27.  I sit back and evaluate my life...am I happy...am I where I want to be?  The answer is generally 'ummm, I'm ok but I could be better".  Well, I have decided that 43 is the year to try and do something about it.

I decided to try (publicly) to come up with 43 things that I can do to make my life better.  I need a goal with clear measurables and a concrete deadline.  I developed this list through a combination of things I've wanted to work on a google search of "how to improve myself".  Most of these are pretty simple things...but I am hoping that they will help me expand my horizons, focus on what's important and improve myself in areas that are important to me.  I think I am also hoping that some become a lifelong habit.

Here is the list:

1) Walk in the morning 43 times
2) Finish writing 43 short stories about travel
3) Send a message to 43 friends that I have lost contact with
4) Try 43 new foods
5) Cook 43 new recipes
